A Prediction
Posted by Garance ()Lindsay Lohan’s new movie I Know Who Killed Me is going to be helped by her recent legal troubles and the terrible reviews it’s received, and be received as a piece of camp trash, rather than a bomb. I’ve never seen a Lohan movie in theaters but I’m going to go see this one just because it looks so awful it could be good. Just check out some of the reviews so far (via Dlisted):
“There is no way that Lohan was in her right mind when she signed the contract for this one.”
“Imagine the worst possible idea for a Parent Trap sequel that manages to combine elements of Stigmata, Dune, The Empire Strikes Back, The Corsican Brothers and Blue Man Group.”
“With sky-blue tools, gloves and mask, the killer looks so much like a member of the Blue Man Group that you expect him to spit marshmallows at his victims.”
“Having broken free of the Disney machine that molded her, Lohan now seems intent on destroying her career and credibility on her own terms.”
“After a 20 minute delay in starting the movie, I had to assume the projector was taking an ethical stand and refusing to be party to the heinous act of showing this movie”
“The film is so cheap, lurid and overwrought it could be made up of lost reels from Grindhouse, except it lacks the knowing, self-referential humor of that B-movie parody.”
How can that not pique your curiosity? That’s not a movie — that’s disaster porn.

“I’ve never seen a Lohan movie in theaters”
I hope the implication is that you saw Mean Girls on DVD, because that movie is seriously quite good. It also makes the subsequent personal and artistic downfall of Lohan all the more disheartening. I think the turning point was when she bleached her hair blond, after that it was all downhill.

I don’t know what made me think of it but the movie ‘Poor White Trash’ starring Sean Young is a great fun.

No such thing as bad publicity.

A movie which is not screened for critics in advance, as I Know Who Killed Me wasn’t, and is dropped into a small-ish number of theaters in out of the way spaces (about 1500, when major pictures show up in 3-4,000) is a dog of the first order. Go, if you must, but don’t kid yourself into thinking this’ll be a “so bad it’s good” moment; by all accounts, this is a dog of a flick that Lohan made while not in the best shape. I’m sorry I missed Georgia Rule, sort of; that one might have been better than critics gave it credit for. As for missing Lohan films, it is a shame - she’s a remarkable young actress with considerable talent, which is why her addiction issues are all the more disheartening - her performances in The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday remakes save them from traditional Disney treacle, Mean Girls is a hoot, and even her small bit in Prarie Home Companion shows she can handle herself with the greats (Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin). I think one of the saddest aspects of pop culture is that the audience winds up as voyeurs in “car wreck” scenarios that are, in reality, rather sad cries for help; that people find Lohan’s descent into addiction amusing or entertaining doesn’t speak well of us. Then again, I thought Paris Hilton should go to jail, so perhaps I shouldn’t clmb on that high horse just yet.

I’ll have to go out of my way to make a special effort not to see this movie. I’d rather watch the washing machine for two hours.

I’ve seen Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, and agree she’s quit good in them….

I actually saw this for free at a preview screening. I do not believe this is directly a film which is so bad that it is good. I think this is actually an improbably bold joke of a film. That is, it entirely means to be bad. The joy of this film is in the fact that it piles so many absurdities without _quite_ cracking a smile. I spent the final two-thirds of the film with a smile, pleased that the film could maintain this ambiguity about its own self-knowledge.
That said, watching the film is an experience full of pain. There’s gore, and before the movie’s even slightly tipped its hand towards farce.
It is something like _Mute Witness_, only amped up enough to become actually fun.
