Knowledge is Power
Posted by Garance ()People sometimes like to argue that gender has no impact on how candidates approach women’s issues, and that all the Democrats are equally good and knowledgeable on reproductive rights topics. I present to you Bill Richardson, as described by Mark Kleiman, at the California Democratic Party 2007 Convention over the weekend:
Richardson…just doesn’t seem very smart, or very thoughtful. Having blundered last week by saying Whizzer White would be his model chief justice, a reporter asks him how he can reconcile that with his strong pro-choice position when White wrote the dissent in Roe v. Wade. Richardson says, “White was in the 60s. Wasn’t Roe v. Wade in the 80s?”
Not knowing when one of the most controversial court cases in the past half century was decided and who wrote the opinions in it is the domestic policy equivalent of a presidential candidate not being able to name the president of Pakistan or Iran.

The 80s.

Byron White is not easily pigeon holed. He, for example, waited until Bill Clinton was elected before resigning.

Is there a source for the 60s vs. 80s comment other than Kleiman? “A reporter” (who?) “asks” (when and where? during a panel? outside in the hall?)

I can ask Mark.

I agree with barry s — there’s much to like in White’s opinions, particularly interpreting protections for the accused.
But the 80s?
To be fair, I’m seeing Steely Dan at the Hard Rock on Tuesday, and they are like so 70s….

I mean, this screw up by Richardson seems embarassing, and his love for CU football star Byron White is kinda odd, but Garance, I think you’re leaving out a pretty key bit of context here, that might acutally be more indicative of what Richardson will actually do in office When he asked to clarify his answer, i.e. pick a sitting justice, he said Ginsberg. Who, not only is a woman, but also the ardent defender of reproductive rights currently on the bench. So I wouldn’t be that worried about his positions on reproductive rights.
Also, don’t forget Richardson’s extensive experience in congress, ambassador to the UN, secretary of energy, negotiating prisoner releases with the world’s worst dictators, being a popular two term governor of a purple state, head of the democratic governors association preceding a huge increase in democrats in statehouses, banning cockfighting, legalizing medical marijuana ETC ETC ETC Clearly, I wish richardon was taken a bit more seriously/had more support (yglesias had a great column about this). AND he’s definitley someone who “knows the name of the president of Pakistan” So yeah, Bill Richardson 08!

May I scratch Bill Richardson off my list because the man sweats like a pig? Eew.
Not being able to name the president of Iran. Hmmm. Clearly the Stephen Colbert candidacy (oh, it’s happening) is DOA to Garance.

[…] Garance argues that Governor Bill Richardson should be disqualified as a serious presidential candidate because of his admiration for former SCOTUS Justice Byron “Whizzer” White. KJCity520 rebuts that charge. […]

Colbert for President! I love the guy and even though he’s wacky and wierd, he’d be better than any of the other candidates.
