What is “theGarance.com”?
This is the personal blog of Garance Franke-Ruta, a.k.a “GFR,” the national political online editor (and producer!) for The Washington Post, meaning, effectively, editor of The Trail. GFR has also worked at The American Prospect, The Washington City Paper, The New Republic, and National Journal magazines, and had stories, criticism, or reviews published in the preceding publications and The Wall Street Journal, The Dallas Morning News, The Washington Monthly, Salon, The Utne Reader, The Guardian Online, and Legal Affairs magazines. She grew up in Mexico, New Mexico and New York City, and graduated from Harvard-Radcliffe in 1997. In 2006, she was a fellow at the Shorenstein Center at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
In addition to maintaining TheGarance.com since 2006, GFR blogged for The American Prospect’s award-winning blog, Tapped, from 2003 to 2007, and more recently contributed to Iowa Independent and TPMCafe.
What’s up with the “The”?
GaranceFranke-Ruta.com seemed like more of a url than most people could reasonably be expected to manage, and an internet squatter owned “Garance.com” and was charging $9,000 for it. “TheGarance.com” was less expensive. If you add “the” or a prefix to most urls, you’ll usually find they are still available.
The photo at the top of the blog was taken in 2004 at Artesa Vineyards in the Carneros region of California.
