Also Nice

You’ve got to hand it to the folks at GOPUSA — when they want to be catty, they do a damn fine job of it. Today their site goes after the woman they’re calling “The Britney Spears of the Right.” Yep, that’s Accuracy in Media columnist Cliff Kincaid‘s new name for Ann Coulter. He writes:

The political equivalent of Britney Spears shaving the hair off her head, Ann Coulter made headlines at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) by calling Democrat John Edwards a faggot. Wearing a leather dress and a Christian cross around her neck, Coulter must be a liberal infiltrator whose purpose is to give conservatism a bad name …

Coulter had assumed “rock star” status on the right, but her latest performance may mean that the rock is sinking fast. AIM has announced that it will be discontinuing sales of books by or merchandise promoting Ann Coulter. We hope that other conservative groups follow our lead …

Ironically, Coulter’s “joke” about Edwards was presented in the context of saying that if she used the word “faggot” to describe him, she would have to go into rehab. The idea of getting Coulter some professional help doesn’t sound so funny to me.

Yes, the diss on Coulter comes with a gratuitous swipe at liberals. But still, the comparison with Spears is hilarious. Coulter does tend to wear some seriously short skirts, she’s got a bad blonde dye-job (no one’s got hair naturally like that at age 45), and she has the temperament (and body) of someone hopped up on drugs — self-aggrandizing, paranoid, and vicious. Sounds like conservatives agree it’s about time to stage an intervention and stop enabling her, lest she wind up a joke over at dlisted, with the rest of the Hollywood cast-offs. Oh, wait…

Sign of the Times

With rising concern about the real estate market comes rising documentation of the downturn. The Bubble Meter blog is a particularly good place to get a handle on the Washington, D.C. and surrounding area market as it continues to deflate. It also provides updates from around the country.

Is the G.O.P. Moving Left?

I was on WBUR’s On Point with Tom Ashbrook on Friday along with Mark Silva, the White House correspondent for The Chicago Tribune. Mark made a really good point after I said that the pendulum has swung, and that liberalism is once again a rising philosophy. He added that one could look at Rudy Giuliani‘s popularity among the G.O.P. faithful as another sign of the swinging pendulum. What if he’s right, and the Giuliani bounce isn’t just air, but — like the inability of South Dakotans to resurrect anti-abortion legislation after going too far with their (overturned) attempt to ban it — a sign of a deeper shift in the national mood? We won’t know for months, but I have a sneaking suspicion that something is afoot.

Nice

DailyKos’s community actions are the most interesting and creative part of the site. Today, the community has briefly morphed into Queer Nation, circa 1990, and is targetting Ann Coulter‘s advertisers. They’re a surprisingly mainstream bunch — USA Today, ING Financial and the like. Now that‘s how you change a cultural norm.
